I Dreamed I Saw St. Kateri

I dreamed I saw St. Kateri
Alive as you or me
Sitting by an ancient beech tree
On the Hudson River dark and dreary
I watch her grow up Mohawk
In another time and place
While I am on Lake Eerie
With a Tribe of Cherokee/
My dream continues and I see
What unites us is a bond of love
In the Persons of the Holy Trinity
I hear a prayer on her lips
And in her heart a plea to be holy
That beats like a tom-tom drum
To her heartbeat’s charity/
Still in my dream
I pass Osage Nation in Ohio
Near the place of my birth
Only to arrive in Winona
A lost world, a Wounded Knee
Far from her native culture
But now further bound together in a Sacred Creed
