Miscellaneous Meanderings on the signs of the times (Vol. 9, No. 98)
Dr. Mark S. Latkovic
March 1, 2018
~Hard to believe it’s March 1st and yet harder to believe we’re almost half way through Lent.
~People who apologize by saying “I’m sorry for what occurred” or “I’m sorry for what happened,” try to put some distance between themselves and their bad deed. They don’t say, “I’m sorry for what I did.”
~The so-called “Nunes Memo” that the media, Democrats, and the DOJ/FBI were warning against releasing for reasons of national security and so on, turns out to do no such thing. It’s all bogus. But no one in the media ever said, “Gee, you think they don’t want it released because it might make them look bad?” (Cf. Victor Davis Hanson, http://www.nationalreview.com/article/456134/fisagate-boomerangs-democrats-hillary-obama).
~In the “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” category, we read: “‘China is the best implementer of Catholic social doctrine,’ says Vatican bishop” (http://catholicherald.co.uk/news/2018/02/06/china-is-the-best-implementer-of-catholic-social-doctrine-says-vatican-bishop/). That’s right, and North Korea is developing nuclear weapons for peaceful purposes.
~“NYT Conservative Repeats Call to Repeal the Second Amendment” (see https://townhall.com/tipsheet/mattvespa/2018/02/23/nyt-conservative-repeats-call-to-repeal-the-second-amendment-n2453412). If you want to see how a “respected,” so-called “conservative” should really not be so respected or considered conservative, then read the article available in the link in the previous sentence.
~With the way some people use the business- and employment-oriented social networking service, LinkedIn, they’re turning it into Facebook (e.g., by posting memes).
~Gee, I had no idea that St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th) was a whole season of its own now. St. Patty’s Day decorations have already been out in February.
~You can’t argue with a Leftist. They’re rarely right. But they think they’re never wrong.
~I’ve noticed condoms littered on city streets this winter. Are people, like, having sex outside in the snow and freezing cold?
~God’s “luck” is his providence.
~A good guy with a gun does stop a bad guy with a gun, regardless of what some teenagers are screaming. It’s not “b.s.” (see https://www.cnn.com/2018/02/18/us/florida-school-shooting-updates/index.html)
~We need more self-control than more gun-control.
~Where are all the complaints about the “prolific” Olympic streaker creating a hostile work environment? (See http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5427389/Prolific-streaker-Mark-Roberts-nude-Winter-Olympics.html).
~“Trump’s budget proposal rejected by U.S. Church leaders” (see https://www.americamagazine.org/politics-society/2018/02/13/trumps-budget-proposal-rejected-us-church-leaders). The real news would be if the Bishops accepted Trump’s budget!
~Blaise Cardinal Cupich strikes again – this time on Francis’ Amoris laetitia (https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/cardinal-cupich-launches-amoris-laetitia-seminars-for-us-bishops-38684). And he keeps on striking with so many foolish statements (on DACA, https://www.lifesitenews.com/blogs/video-shows-cardinal-cupich-calling-catholic-senator-banned-from-holy-commu and conscience, https://www.thecatholicthing.org/2018/02/21/cardinal-cupichs-revolutionary-conscience/) and programs (gun-free Chicago Archdiocesan facilities, http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-guns-banned-in-parishes-met-20170912-story.html; see also https://www.americamagazine.org/politics-society/2018/02/28/chicagos-cardinal-cupich-listen-young-people-about-guns), that I can’t keep track of them all.
~“German cardinal urges pastoral care of gay couples” (see
https://www.americamagazine.org/faith/2018/02/07/german-cardinal-urges-pastoral-care-gay-couples). For a start, how about encouraging gay “couples” to live chastely?
~Speaking of gay issues, here’s a column by the gay NYT’s columnist Frank Bruni on Fr. James Martin, S.J. (see https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/02/03/opinion/sunday/scariest-catholic-james-martin.html). I don’t find Martin scary, I find him annoying.
~Growing human eggs in the laboratory (see https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/human-eggs-grown-in-lab-offer-hope-to-infertile-gj925f5kw). We need to ask the question, will it not only help the infertile have children, but is the technique morally licit? That is, do the means assist or do they actually substitute for the conjugal act? And, we should also ask: What sort of couple is this? Married? Unmarried? Gay or lesbian? But if the means are morally illicit, then these latter questions don’t even have to be asked.
~“Woman Still Getting Civil-War Survivor Benefits Shows How Federal Policies Mortgage the Future” (see http://reason.com/archives/2018/02/04/how-federal-policies-mortgage-the-future). And progressives want the government to pass more laws and regulations with respect to guns? Stricter background checks, for example. But the government is still handing out Civil War-related benefits to someone? I think it’s safe to say that our government is incompetent in so many areas.
~Since we’re in Lent, I thought it would be good to post something on fasting. This news article is quite good (see https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/whats-the-point-of-fasting-anyway-29180).
