Poetry on the Factory Room Floor
January 11, 2017
Dr. Mark S. Latkovic
I break the monotony
By writing lines of poetry
On the back of paint can labels.
But the cans don’t stop their progress
Down the conveyor belt
For us to attach bails before boxing
And then placing them
Four to a box on square wooden pallets.
These are different kinds of lines:
Machines of steel that hum and chortle
With noise that drowns out thinking
And heat that makes our heads beads of sweat.
Do my teenage scribblings
During break time
Humanize the process?
No, not the process
They keep me human
From 7:00am till 3.
