Out for my 5-mile morning stroll the other day, I saw two bumper stickers on one SUV: The one, “Pro-Child, Pro-Family, Pro-Choice”; the other, right next to it, the ubiquitous “Coexist.” Before commenting on them, I’m announcing both a “sarcasm alert” and an “irony alert.” First, the irony: The world religions, and men and women, can all live in peace amidst the diversity the bumper sticker proclaims…except for the unborn child. He or she is not included in the mix to be welcomed, this obviously self-regarded morally superior person tells us. Nor, in this worldview, is the most fundamental biological relationship of all – the mother-child bond – characterized as one where coexistence should reign. Now for the sarcasm…Since abortion – and that’s what the euphemism “pro-choice” actually means your choosing to support – involves the direct taking of the innocent unborn child’s life, how can this person call him or herself “pro-child”? How, moreover, can he or she consider him or herself “pro-family” by supporting the killing of the very life that makes family possible in the first place – the child? Me thinks that these two bumper stickers don’t coexist too well at all.
