Lilacs in Spring

Lilacs in spring remind me of my grandmother
Like no other flower
And no month more than May
Reminds me of her name, Mary
Maybe it’s because
Spring was the season
That always brought a reason
To bring her to mind
When the smell of her cooking
Could fill your senses
Smelling and looking
At the aromas arising
Over backyard fences
So I’d run inside
And fill myself with her latest feast
That would consummate a joy
Impossible to hide
